KATE, A GRADUATE FROM CARDIFF TELLS US HOW SHE CHANGED FROM A CAREER IN ACCOUNTANCY TO A CAREER IN PODIATRY!

After leaving school, I went to Newport University and undertook an Accountancy degree,  not really what I wanted to do but seemed a good career choice at the time!  After finishing the degree I started work at a local comprehensive school in the learning support department where I supported children in numeracy development. Whilst a very rewarding career to begin with, after 18 months I found myself questioning my choices. Listening to other staff talk about university, I was intrigued and wanted a change in career.

A couple of days before clearing I started looking through career options, it was then that I came across Podiatry. Podiatry appealed to me due to the impact that it has on everyday lives. I never knew how important feet were until I researched podiatry, from sportspeople to the elderly. From that point I knew that podiatry would provide me with the rewarding healthcare career that I was striving for.

CLEARING DAY…

It was a Thursday and I knew that clearing was open. All day I was on pins as I was really nervous about calling Cardiff Metropolitan University. I paced around my home and my stomach was going wild. It was about 4.30pm when I finally plucked up the courage to call. I spoke to Alan Phelan (then admissions tutor), who put me at ease straight away. We talked about my experiences and my grades. Although my grades weren’t at the usual entry requirements, I was informed that there was one space remaining on the course, and due to my previous degree, a place could be possible.

This was the point where I began to really push for the opportunity and then, it was official, I was offered a place!

Once I was off the phone I was jumping around and really excited I made the best choice, I was going to train to be a Podiatrist!

I thought I would struggle on the course, but the support I’ve received has been amazing throughout my time at Cardiff and has allowed me to grow and develop. The lecturers are friendly and are always willing to help and having smaller classes allows more discussion with lecturers.

I  graduated in July and already have an NHS job lined up.  Summing up my time on the course I’d saying that studying at Cardiff Met has given me a true excitement for podiatry. Over the past three years, the course hasn’t just provided me with a career, it’s shaped my life and I’ve loved every minute of it.

This was the best choice I’ve made during my education and I am so happy that I chose to study Podiatry at Cardiff Met.
