The cost of FCP is considerably less than an employed GP or temporary locum.

Comparison of Band 6-8 compared with GP

Multiple pilot studies have been carried out by existing FCP service provision demonstrating cost effectiveness and in some areas hundreds of thousands of pounds have been saved in the NHS.(ref)  This was within the area of physiotherapy, and the concept remains the same. Physiotherapy has been largely successful in MSK FCP provision. With an increasingly aging population, increasing levels of diabetes and peripheral arterial disease, there is no reason why podiatry provision of FCP services with a focus on all lower limb presentations should not be as successful and equate to equal if not more cost savings within the NHS.

Savings were demonstrated in these areas.

      1. less secondary care intervention
      2. Less imaging referral
      3. Less repeat GP appts
      4. Less medication prescribing

All of these services and more are within the capabilities of the FC podiatrist pathway.
